Your Digital Photos for Scrapbooking are
at Risk, Protect Them

Do you know that digital photos can be lost even if saved on hard drives, memory cards and CDs?

Well, I'm not one to think about such things until my computer died recently. For a while, it didn't struck me as that bad. Until I realized that my hundreds of digital photos that I've saved on my hard drive were gone as well.

I could have tried out some data recovery service, but I didn't want to waste money recovering those photos. I'm thankful that recently I did go my nearby photo developer to have some of the more important pictures printed out. So it wasn't that depressing.

Still, it pinched me a little to think that I've lost a good number of photos. My boyfriend's vacation photos were gone, saved for those I did print out... All my good friend's recent birthday digi photos vanished in seconds. I had yet to print out any. I'll have to ask her for her copies.

Desktop
Technological advances of today like computer, digital cameras and CDs create a lot of convenience and do wonders. Yet they are like time-bombs too if precautions aren't taken.

With digital cameras, photo-takers especially scrapbookers are taking increasingly more pictures than ever before. And large number of digital photographers mainly save their digi photos on their computer's hard drives.

Because many of us think that it's safe to do so.

We think that we can print them out someday and keep postponing that someday. Till something bad happened and our heart broke from the lost.

Digital Camera
I'm not the only case of lost digital images because of a computer crash.

I've heard of a heartbreaking story where a woman's thousands of photos were wiped out, thinking her server backed up her photos all these while. Well, the server never did. And even after spending over $2000 on data recovery service, only half of her photos were recovered.

What Risks Do Your Digital Photos Face?

So please be aware of:

1) Hard disk failures. Yes it does happen. It happened to me recently and it had happened to many others.

CD
2) CDs are assumed to have a shelf life of about 10 years. So you'll have to transfer your images to new CDs now and then. Plus CDs can be damaged by heat exposure, scratches and humidity. And there's also accidental writing over photos saved on your CDs.

3) Digital cameras and PCs can be stolen. Digital cameras can be lost and memory cards can go missing.

Print Out Your Most Precious Photos Quickly

So what can you do about it?

Stop accumulating loads of digital images and not printing them out. Don't just save your digital photos on your hard drives and CDs.

Have hard copies of your most important pictures.

After taking photos of events, quickly sort out the ones you want to print out.

OK, you might think since anything could happen. What about the hard copies being burned up in a fire?

Yes, that could happen, but not as likely as stolen cameras, lost memory cards, CD damage, hard disk failures, and accidentally writing over photos saved on CDs.

We can't prevent all things but we can avoid some common things.

Because when such common things happened, what we have left are hard copies of the precious photos we managed to print out. And those we've scrapbooked...
