Scrapbooking Perfection

How to Tackle It?

Does your need for scrapbooking perfection bug you big time and drive you to distraction?

Do you find yourself always nit-picking on some tiny detail on your layout and agonizing over how you wish it could be your perfect masterpiece?

Do you spend hours arranging and rearranging your photo and embellishment placements, fearing to adhere all the elements onto your page for fear that it would ruin everything?

Are you a scrapbook perfectionist? Do you have this thought that goes, "Aargh... I'll never create a perfect layout" whenever you're scrapping?

How do you deal with your scrapbooking perfection tendency and regain your joy in scrapbooking?

"Striving for excellence motivates you;
striving for perfection is demoralizing."
~Harriet Braiker

Oh, how very true. Scrapping is meant to be fun. It's meant to be a creative outlet for you to express yourself and your creativity. Why let your scrapbooking perfection bug take away your joy in scrapping?

We're not perfect, and so naturally our layouts will reflect this truth. And leaving imperfections in your work will remind you that your creations are real, just like you.

Even the moments you scrapbook about, they include both good and not so fantastic moments. Yet all these good and not so good moments form part of your favorite and most meaningful memories. Similarly, scrapbooking with imperfections will spice up your layouts, and let each layout shine with its own personality.

Perfection can be perfect and yet dull... Imperfection can be imperfect and yet perfectly unique... All these little imperfections are what made your layouts all the more interesting!

OK, let's recall about the desire for something perfect... like a perfect wedding.

Even if you've planned everything to death, something unexpected would inevitably happen out of nowhere. Just to test your reflexes. Are you going to let these happenstances ruin your whole wedding? Of course not.

If you were to sit for a moment and think about it, it's the happenstances that made the wedding even more memorable. All those imperfections and "flaws" made your wedding extra special, unique and truly yours.

Learn something from each of your layouts. Experiment, make mistakes and let these be lessons you don't want repeat in your future layouts.

Remember, there's always another layout. It's far from a life-threatening situation.

At the end of the day, it's about your loved ones loving your efforts in documenting all those memories that count. Scrapbooking is about preserving memories, not about perfection. Keep the big picture in mind as you scrapbook and you'll breathe easier and have more joy than anxiety in scrapping.

Appreciate the beauty of recording the stories and knowing that you're appreciated for doing so.

"Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep."
~ Scott Adams
